It’s greener where you water it.

The Cannabyss team recently attended Cape Town’s Cannabis Expo. It was our brand’s first event of this nature, and we couldn’t be happier with how it all worked out.

The event has been around for a few years now, with a break during the height of the pandemic of course, so it’s easy to take it for granted. But if you stop and think about it, it really is quite remarkable. Would you have believed me ten years ago If I had told you that there would be a mainstream public event where you could interact with over 150 cannabis brands, sample cannabis infused food and drinks, and even smoke cannabis?

It’s a wonderful reminder of just how far cannabis has come in South Africa in recent years.

And the event seems to be getting bigger and better as Cannabis gains momentum in its journey into mainstream freedom. The vibe was buzzing, with this year’s edition also featuring a music festival element. The event organisers even managed to create a private space within the public space, which enabled smokers to safely enjoy their bud within the framework of the current laws.

It was also really encouraging to see thousands of people, young and old, from all walks of life coming together in their shared interest in this amazing plant. It went a long way to erasing the harmful and false stereotypes surrounding cannabis enthusiasts, and illustrated that the plant is enjoyed by people just like you and me.

Also worth noting is the rise of Psilocybin “magic” mushrooms. Researchers have recently been discovering more about the therapeutic potential of these mushrooms. The Cannabis Expo featured a dedicated space for visitors to learn more about them, and there were also multiple talks on the subject. We are excited to see this develop, and hope that mushrooms soon see as much mainstream acceptance as cannabis has recently.

We set our stall up to show a range of our products including grow equipment, vapes, distillates and rolling accessories. Our sales exceeded our expectations, and our team got a kick out of sharing their passion and knowledge. Sincere thanks to all who came to say hi, and show their support.

We were all very proud of our co-founder Clint, who drew quite the crowd for his talk on the main stage on Sunday morning. Clint is relatively new to the cannabis industry, but has decades of experience in technology. His talk, entitled “The Sickle meets the Stem” explored how technology enables innovation, collaboration and efficiency in the cannabis industry.

To put the cherry on the dagga cookie, our Sunday afternoon ended with another kind of victory for the Cannabyss team. One of our brand ambassadors took to the stage and managed to triumph over the competition to take home the trophy for the speed rolling competition.

His blistering speed of 4.06 seconds earned him first prize, including sample seeds and a voucher for a cannabinoid profile analysis from Qure Analytics. Another perfect illustration that practice makes perfect. And our man has had some practice, that’s for sure.

We learned a lot this year, and have come away with the experience and lots of ideas to make it even better next time. Suffice to say we are already really looking forward to next year. See you there.
